The form of these caned chairs, with Grecian-scrolled legs and uprights, relates to that of a suite of chairs supplied around 1800 to Shugborough, Staffordshire. The latter having Grecian palm-flowers in place of lyres (J. Martin Robinson, Shugborough, National Trust Guidebook, 1989, p. 30).

A set of six similar ebonised chairs was sold from the Edward James Collection, West Dean Park, Chichester, West Sussex, Christie's house sale, 2 June 1986, lot 289.
