Each channelled overall and with oval back centred by a scrolling anthemion, the outcurved arms on downswept supports, the serpentine- fronted padded seat and armrests covered in pink and beige material, on cabriole legs, restorations, later blocks (2)

Lot Essay

A set of sixteen related chairs 'with compass backs' framing palm- flowers and upholstered in 'blue morocco leather and double rows brass nails' was supplied in 1772 for the Dining Room at Mersham-le-Hatch by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) (P. Thornton, 'The Furnishing of Mersham-le-Hatch Part II', Apollo, June 1970, p. 44, fig. 6).

A set of chairs with the same palm-flower backs, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 17 November 1994, lot 133.
