Lot Essay
Johnstone, Jupe and Co. were reknowned for making extending tables, with a patented design by Robert Jupe of 47 Welbeck Street. John Johnstone, had premises in New Bond Street, and he made the first dining-tables, in 1835. The firm of Johnstone and Jeans established themselves after 1842 and were successors to the original firm of Johnstone Jupe and Co. A rosewood table of very similar design to the present lot is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 527.
