The table, inlaid with Etruscan-black calamander wood, has its frieze and Grecian-scrolled legs embellished with patterae and pointed flutes in the antique fashion promoted by T. Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807.
There is a possibility that this sofa table is Scottish. It has a Northumberland provenance and this form of leg appears on a stand for a display case, supplied by the Edinburgh cabinet-maker, William Trotter, for Paxton House, Berwickshire in 1815 (illustrated in F. Bamford, 'A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840', Furniture History, 1983, pl. 58). The distinct reeded castor features on a penwork sofa table, sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 28 June 1984, lot 127.
