Lot Essay

A similar coffer-on-stand but with a Roman Emperor profile head on the apron, is illustrated in G. Kenyon, The Irish Furniture at Malahide Castle, pp.104 and 105. The present example has the additional drawer and 'hock' or muscle above the feet, and the classical head is replaced by a lion's head, which relates to a blanket chest sold from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. T.K. Laidlaw, Somerton, Castlenock, Co. Dublin, Christie's house sale, 24-25 May 1988, lot 149. Another related example was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 21 January 1999, lot 332.
