Lot Essay

During 1920's, Gio Ponti was designing classically inspired ceramics and majolica for Richard Ginori, and later produced similarly inspired furniture. This revival of classicism is described as the Novecento and was promoted through Domus magazine, which Ponti founded in 1928, and the Monza Biennials. Ponti sought to design modern furniture of high-quality for the middle-class home whilst remaining faithful to the precepts of the Novecento. This double-fronted cabinet is clearly classically inspired with lined niches to display statues and sculptures and a symmetrical arrangement of drawers and cupboards.
