The treble-grip action-body with side-clips and percussion fences, toplever, rebounding sidelocks, articulated front trigger, the action-body, lockplates and furniture profusely carved with the heads of mythical beasts, mythological female demi-figures and grotesques amid foliate-scrollwork, flowers and fruit, bright finish overall, highly-figured replacement stock, the Whitworth-steel chopper-lump barrels with matt rib

Lot Essay

The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1922 as the number 2 of a pair of pigeon guns. No mention is made of the engraver in the Purdey ledgers but the work is almost certainly that of Harry Kell - one of the greatest of late Victorian artist-engravers
