A rare 19th-Century lacquered-brass surveying level/theodolite,
signed on the silvered compass East-West bar Schmalcalder's PATENT LONDON 82 Strand, the telescope with sliding tube focusing, bubble level, purple, red and green shades, mounted at the eyepiece with hinged bracket incorporating fine adjustment and prism sight to read against the finely engraved silvered compass circle, divided in four quadrants and contained in a glazed circular box -- 3in. (8.9cm.) diameter, with rack and pinion adjustment, the telescope mounted at the centre with clamp, having similar vertical fine-screw adjustment, the underside of the compass box with cruciform tubular pillar mounting, arranged so as to locate on the vertical pillar, secured by two butterfly-nut tightening screws with tangent-screw fine adjustment and secured by four additional knurled screws, and screwed to the shaped slightly tapering pillar support and plinth base, overall height when assembled -- 9in. (24.1cm.), with the telescope and circle mounted in the side position for use in elevation -- 7in. (19.7cm.) high, when dismantled, contained in the original pine carrying case -- 7in. (19.7cm.) high
