A magnificent 19th-Century lacquered-brass repeating circle,
signed Gambey a Paris, the primary telescope with graduated bubble level, fore and aft sights, object glass dust cap, four wire adjusting screws, the trunnion axis mounted on twin supports located on the 10in. (25.4cm.) diameter circle, with finely divided silvered scale, four verniers with glass shades, magnifiers and fine blued-steel pointers, the axis and six-spoke circle frame rotating over a similar sub-frame, supporting the tangent-screw fine adjusters with clamps, the secondary telescope with angular adjustment, mounted on a bracket supported by the main axis and fitted to the axial body, with graduated bubble level, tension adjusters and vertical quadrant with clamp, additionally supporting the counterbalance weight, adjustable for length, with bar and locating screw, raised on a massive tapering pillar support over the horizontal circle, finely engraved, with associated vernier, tangent-screw adjuster and clamp, with additional clamp securing the horizontal circle to the tripod stand, incorporating three adjustable screw feet, maximum overall height of instrument -- 19in. (50cm.), with accessories, contained in the original brass corner bound walnut carrying case, with two iron side handles -- 19in. (50cm.) high
