Lot Essay

Jwan Winberg worked mainly in Russia where he was an associate of the Academy of St. Petersburg in 1830, a member by 1846, and a miniature painter to the court of Russia. He was a good miniaturist using pink colourings and brown-red shadows, and giving particular care and attention to the clothes. A Swiss gold box with a portrait of Tsar Nicholas I by Winberg was sold at Christie's, London, March 31, 1998, lot 4.
