Her father, Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich, the grandson of Nicholas I through his youngest son, was married morganatically to Sophie, Countess Merenberg, the daughter of Nicholas, Prince of Nassau, and his morganatic wife Natalia Alexandrovna, the daughter of the poet Alexander Pushkin.
