Shaped cylindrical, the tapering hardstone handle with with shaped mount with bands of ropework, palmettes and trellis-work over engraved ground, the spreading matrix with the crests of Howe and Curzon as borne by the Earls Howe, marked on mount

Lot Essay

The crests are probably for Richard, 4th Earl Howe (1861-1929), who was Lord in Waiting to both Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, and later Lord Chamberlain to Queen Alexandra, sister of the last Tsarina.
