The ovoid hardstone handle surmounted by a cabochon garnet with two key-pattern handles suspending foliate and floral garlands, on partially gadrooned shaped stem and speading foot, the matrix engraved with the crowned cypher possibly of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna, marked on foot

Lot Essay

The Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna 'Stana' (1867/68-1935) was the daughter of King Nicholas I of Montenegro. She was married first to Georgii Maksimilianovich Prince Romanovskii, 6th Duke of Leuchtenburg, and after their divorce, to Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich. She and her sister Militsa were early supporters of Rasputin and responsible for introducing him to the Russian court.
