Jörg Ruel specialized in setting precious materials and natural curiosities in silver-gilt mounts. Rosenberg lists a number of such cabinet pieces by Ruel, most notably a partridge-form cup set with "feathers" of mother-of-pearl, formerly in the Leopold de Rothschild collection, and now in the Gilbert collection (Martin Chapman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold and Silver: Recent Acquisitions II, 1991, fig. J). In the Green Vaults, Dresden, there is a mother-of-pearl flask by Ruel with applied silver-gilt jewel-form mounts similar to those on the present cup (see Joachim Menzhausen, The Green Vaults, 1970, pp. 84-85, illus. 51 and 52).
