Probably German, Late 16th Century
Flaring cylindrical, on molded foot with stiff-leaf borders, with two die-rolled mid-bands, the scroll handle with caryatid, the domed cover with cherub's masks against strapwork, an urn finial, and a figural thumbpiece, apparently unmarked

Two similar serpentine tankards with silver-gilt mounts and caryatid handles are illustrated in Eva Maria Hoyer, Sächsischer Sepentin, Leipzig, 1995, fig. 16 and page 81. Both are unmarked. One of these, with a handle nearly identical to the present example, is in the collection of the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin, formerly of the Prussian Royal collection at Charlottenburg. It is attributed to central or southern Germany (see Klaus Pechstein, Goldschmiedewerke der Renaissance, 1971, fig. 83).
