A FINE PAIR OF VICTORIAN SILVER SAUCEBOATS
Maker's mark of John Mortimer and John Samuel Hunt, London, 1843
Each of oval form, on three scroll legs headed by rocaille, the sides chased with spiral flutes, acanthus and trelliswork, the scalloped rim applied with foliate scrolls, the handle formed as a horse rampant regardant on foliate scrolls, the front applied with a mirror cypher beneath an imperial crown, the interior gilt, marked under bases, also stamped MORTIMER & HUNT LONDON, 1147 and engraved with inventory numbers No. 3 and No. 4 and scratchweights

Lot Essay

A sauce boat of identical model by the same maker applied with a WW monogram below a count's coronet sold at Sotheby's, London, June 6, 1996, lot 403. Another sauceboat of this model but with a lion rampant handle by J. S. Hunt sold in these Rooms, Thursday, April 22, 1993, lot 278.

This model was first used by Paul Storr as early as 1812; an example by Robert Garrard of 1818 is also known (see Sotheby's, London, July 18, 1968, lot 149).
