This picture derives from van der Goes's lost prototype, of which copies are in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples and the Rijksmuseum (see M.J. Friedlnder, Early Netherlandish Painting, IV, ed. N. Veronee-Verhaegen, Leyden, 1969, pl. 37); a surviving fragment of the original is at Christ Church, Oxford.
