Lot Essay

The composition of this picture derives closely from the Madonna and Child with an Angel and the Young Baptist from the workshop of Botticelli now in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin, no. 110; (recorded in R. Lightbown, Botticelli, II, London, 1978, p. 137, no. C39, illustrated, as probably dating from the 1490s). The present composition differs in the background, and in the book held by the angel in the present picture. The figures of the Madonna and Child and the Baptist reappear in a workshop tondo now in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore (no. 37.422).
