Lot Essay

The figure of Christ in this picture is comparable to that in Christ in His Glory with the Virgin Mary and Saints surrounded by Angels sold in these Rooms, 28 March 1971, lot 90. Since Berenson, loc. cit., included this picture in his repertoire of the work of Girolamo da Santa Croce, a part of the artist's oeuvre has been attributed to his son, Francesco, who worked in close collaboration with his father. As Francesco's style is very close to that of his father, it is hard to distinguish their hands. So, for example, the head of the Saint on the left of this picture is similar to that of Saint Joseph in Francesco's Adoration of the Child in the Museo Civico, Padua (see B. della Chiesa and E. Bacceschi, 'I pittori da Santacroce', I pittori bergamaschi: Il Cinquecento, Bergamo, 1976, II, illustrated).
