Lot Essay

These pictures are comparable stylistically to Orpheus and Euridice by Burrini (R. Roli, Pittura bolognese 1650-1800. Dal Cignani ai Gandolfi, Bologna, 1977, fig. 133b). The position of the head and distinctive facial features of the Angel show strong affinities with the coloured chalk drawing of a Head of a boy (formerly with Yvonne Tan Bunzl) and with the painting of Saint John offered at Phillips, London, 10 April 1990, lot 49, as attributed to Giovanni Francesco Burrini.
