The Holland-Martin collection was for the most part formed in the eighteenth Century by the collector, John Skippe (1742-1812) of Ledbury, Hertfordshire. Skippe was himself an amateur artist and presumably the Skippe Gugliemo who in 1769 accepted honorary membership of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. He travelled between 1766-1767 and 1772-1775 in Italy, acquiring there some paintings and a considerable collection of Old Master Drawings, including works by for example Giovanni Bellini and Lorenzo Lotto, many of which were sold in these Rooms, 20-21 November 1958.
