A NEAR COMPLETE SET OF THIS IMPRESSIVE WORK, WITH VERY FINE PLATES. Following Flandin's successful journey to Persia as part of the embassy sent in 1839, he was sent, in 1843, "to assist Botta at the excavations at Nineveh, making drawings of the Assyrian remains. On the way he spent time at Rhodes and in Syria. L'Orient contains material collected on this journey: vol. I concerns Constantinople, the Bosphorus and Smyrna; vol. II is dedicated entirely to Rhodes; vol. III describes Syria and Mesopotamia. Vol. IV. contains material from his earlier journey to Persia via Armenia": Blackmer 601; Brunet II.1281. (4)
