FIRST EDITION. At the end of his short preface, the author expresses the hope that his "slight sketches of Persia" will win "public favor", stating that he "has, in Persian phraseology, caused "the nightingale of the pen to flutter around the rose-bud of expectation". Much of his work takes the form of an overview rather than a day-to-day travel account, although volume II contains letters sent from the author to his friends while travelling, included because of his belief that "one line written on the spot is worth a thousand recollections."
