JOHNSON, John. A Journey from India to England, through Persia, Georgia, Russia, Poland, and Prussia, in the year 1817. London: Longman, Hurst [etc.], 1818. 4 (262 x 215 mm). 12 aquatint plates by T. Fielding after the author, 5 hand-coloured, one engraved plan (Coloured plates affected by offsetting.) Contemporary mottled boards (rebacked in modern calf, inner hinges strengthened).
FIRST EDITION. The journey, undertaken in the belief that it would prove a viable alternative to the equally long passage by sea, lasted almost seven months and cost the author 220. He felt able to recommend it to his fellow army officers, but did admit that "for those with whom eating and drinking is a primary consideration, the stores of an Indiaman claim a decided preference".
