Half-title, titles printed in red and black, instructions to the binder at back (1 leaf), engraved frontispiece by B. Picart, dedication with engraved head-piece, engraved portrait of the author by G. Valck after G. Kneller, 3 folding engraved maps (on guards), 111 engraved plates (13 folding, 54 double-page), showing 270 subjects including views, flora and fauna, antiquities, costumes and several fine panoramas (subjects numbered 1-260), and 44 engraved illustrations in the text. (Without half-title to vol. II or final instuctions to the binder laef at back.) Contemporary mottled sheep, spine gilt with orange morocco lettering-piece (extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: Otto Friedrich von Bchwald (signature, by descent: later ownership stamp and ?bookplate).

Le Brun, encouraged by the success of his Voyage au Levant (see lot ???????) began his journey to Moscow and Persia in 1701, returning to Holland in 1708. He was one of the first to describe the Samoyeds and their country. Also included are large folding panoramas of 'Moscow' (on 3 sheets) and 'Spahan' (on 3 sheets).
