FIRST EDITION of this major work. The author travelled via the Caucasus to Teheran, then south to Isphahan and the site of ancient Persepolis. Here he made a large number of drawings and transcribed a number of cuneiform inscriptions. Porter remained in Shiraz for a while before returning to Isphahan, then proceeding to Ecbantana and Baghdad and before journeying on from Katabasis to Seutari along the route followed by Xenophon. Abbey Travel 359; Tooley 384. (2)
