Lot Essay

Malik ibn Anas, Imam of the madhab of the Malikis, one of the four orthodox schools of Islamic law spent his life in Medina studying and preserving the hadith, collated in his monumental work al-Muwatta'. It is a well known work of fiqh and hadith. Malikism was introduced into Muslim Spain as early as the end of the 2nd/8th century by Andalusian scholars.

There is a marginal commentary on the main text by Abi Abdullah Rashid ibn Abi Bakr al-Balasani, written around the main body of the text.
The first juz of this work was sold in these rooms 14 October 1997, lot 69. It was dated 542 and was written by the same scribe in the Great Mosque of Granada.
