Lot Essay

This khanjarli is a very fine example of a type which was produced in Vizianagaram, a town famous for its arms manufacturing. The figures running along the knuckleguard appear to be the extended set of 22 avatars of Vishnu, as in the Bhagavata Purana, rather than the usual ten. One of the other two figures is Hanuman; the last may be a vidyadhara.
