Lot Essay

The red ground carpets with scrolling arabesques terminating in palmettes are most commonly encountered in 17th century Isfahan carpets. This fragment offered here attests to the fact that this is a variant on the design. Please see a further discussion on this group in the introductory chapter to the catalogue of the Bernheimer Family Collection of Carpets sold in these rooms, London, 14 February 1996, pages 15-16.
