Dr. Jennifer Montagu suggests that the sculpture is related to Vincenzo Foggini's statue for Mafra, in Portugal, as suggested by the inscription. The drawing is not after the statue, but after a bozzetto.

Lot Essay

Vincenzo Foggini, son of Giovanni Battista, was responsible for a number of works in Florence including the equestrian statue of Francis III of Lorraine at the Porta San Gallo and the statue of Astronomy for the tomb of Galileo in Santa Croce.
