Lot Essay

Saintin studied under Drolling and Picot at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He left for America in 1853 and painted scenes of the Wild West, becoming a member of the New York Academy in 1858. He returned to France in 1862. Raimondo de Madrazo y Garreta (1841-1920), to whom this drawing is dedicated, was a Spanish painter of society portraits who worked in Paris and was a friend of Marcel Proust.
