The shield chair back design used for this suite of furniture is closely related to a design in George Hepplewhite's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, of 1794 (R. Edwards, Hepplewhite Furniture Designs, London, 1947, pl. 1). George Hepplewhite (d. 1786), English cabinet-maker and furniture designer is best known for his designs of furniture, and the Guide provides us with a valuable record of respectable furniture from the 1780's. The preface to the Guide states that the designs seek 'to unite elegance and utility, and blend the useful with the agreeable.' Very little furniture corresponds closely to his designs, although his designs were popular in continental Europe and much Italian & Spanish seat furniture was influenced by Hepplewhite's designs.
