This coffer shows the resurgence of interest in the Momoyama style in the 19th century, when many period items were redecorated to satisfy market tastes. The decorator's limited knowledge of oriental art is demonstrated by the use of a popular Chinese motif, a Chinaman on a horse, now surrounded by Japanese-style decoration.
