Lot Essay

In a letter dated November 1943, Prof. Leo von Puyvelde describes the present picture as 'a good and characteristic work of Rubens' dateable to circa 1620. He identifies the sitter as Jan Wildens by way of a comparison with van Dyck's portrait of Wildens in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
