Portrait of Giancarlo di Cosimo II de' Medici (1611-1663), half-length, in Cardinal's robes, holding his biretta in his right hand

The sitter was the second son of Grand Duke Cosimo II de' Medici and Maria Maddelena of Austria. Generalissimo del Mare in the Spanish navy, he was created Cardinal in 1644 and left Rome to receive the cardinal's hat in 1645, accompanied by Justus Sustermans. The general pose in this portrait relates closely to Baccicio's portrait of Leopoldo de' Medici in the Uffizi, Florence.
