An elaborately bound carte-de-visite album with 198 cartes inserted in pre-cut window mounts with decorative printed borders, the majority with photographers' printed credits on the card mounts and several with additional ink stamp of Maison Alph. Giroux, titles in ink on pages below images, two additional cartes-de-visite loosely laid in album with one mounted albumen print composite portrait in the shape of a cross and one cabinet card titled The Great Tichborne Case Trial at Bar, Court of Queen's Bench, dark green velvet with applied gilt-metal straps, clasps, centrepiece and edges to both covers, g.e., 4to.

A fine and carefully annotated early album including the British royal family, Princess Mary, the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge, the King of Belgium, the King and Prince Frederick of Prussia, the Emperor & Empress of France, Prince Napoleon, Princess Clothilde, the Emperor & Empress of Russia, the Emperor & Empress of Austria, the Kings of Spain, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal and Bavaria; a portrait of a Cantonese woman tea merchant from the Exposition Universelle of 1867; French aristocracy; British politicians and statesmen; Georges Sand, Lamartins and Dor by Nadar; Rossini, Verdi, Rosa Bonheur, Victor Hugo, Dickens, Lord Lytton, Bismark, 'Abd el Kader', de Lesseps, Garibaldi (including one apparently showing him in bed with his leg in plaster); Presidents Davis and Lincoln (the latter by Brady, published by Anthony and with the additional ink stamp of Maison Alph. Giroux on verso), Generals MacClellan and Beauregard; also including several other eminent historical figures copied from paintings, art reproductions and European views.
