A fine album containing over 350 photographs, salt prints and albumen prints, the majority in carte-de-visite format, many of these coated and on early unprinted mounts; thirty-one larger photographs to approx. 7 x 5 in., including four with oval blindstamp of Herbert Watkins and two signed on recto in ink Mayer Frres & Pierson, variously mounted up to six-per-page, ink manuscript titles and occasional dates, additional notes in pencil in a later hand, brown morocco lined with royal blue silk, covers edged in gilt-metal, applied gilt-metal monogram HD within gilt-metal border with knotted rope relief on front cover, titled Photographs in gilt on spine, lacking gilt clasps, oblong lge. 4to.

An early album relating to the Rothschild family including portraits of Baron Mayer Rothschild; Anthony (1st Baronet), his daughters Constance and Annie; Gustave and Salomon; Evelina, Nathaniel (2nd Baronet, 1st Baron U.K.), Alfred, Leopold, James, Arthur, Hannah, Adele, Emma and Nathaniel (later Lord Rothschild) as children; with French and British aristocracy; European statesmen and politicians; Emperor Louis Napoleon, Empress Eugnie (both in larger format by Mayer Frres) and the Prince Imperial of France; the Queen of Spain and many others; approx. eighty cartes-de-visite by Disdri including a self-portrait, many of these varnished; large portraits of the composer M.J. Balfe, the artist Solomon A. Hart, author Albert R. Smith and another by Watkins; other large studies of the young Pasha of Egypt, Benjamin Davidson (San Francisco), Capt. & Mrs. Frederick Herbert and William Harrison Ainsworth.
