Lot Essay

The first of the prints in this lot is a plate prepared for Duchenne's submission for the Prix Volta in March 1857, an award for the most useful application of electricity. It varies from that used in his later publication of 1862, where the title was altered to Mcanisme de la Physionomie. Only two prints of this image are known. The other, in Les Archives de la Ville de Paris, has had the credit to Tournachon deleted.
