This commemorative statue of George IV as Roman emperor follows a tradition of well-known portrayals in the 'antique' manner depicting the King, as well as national military heroes Admiral Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington. A monumental ormolu centerpiece of the monarch similarly depicted in full classical attire was commissioned as a presentation piece to the King and was executed by royal silversmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell in 1822 (sold by Order of the Trustess of the Conyngham Settlement, Christie's London, 19 November 1992, lot 114).
