Lot Essay

A Gillows drawing dated 1825 in the Gillows archives (E102 1952) depicts a nearly identical chair designed for Earl Cornwallis for the dining room at Linton Park, Kent. An identical set of chairs is shown in situ in the dining room at Erddig Park, Denbighshire (see H.A.Tipping, English Homes, period IV, vol.I, London, 1925, p.188, fig.244). A set of nineteen chairs of this model was sold by Lord Brownlow, Belton House, Lincolnshire, Christie's on the premises, 30 April-2 May 1984, lot 55. This set was apparently part of an extensive Gillows commission, probably supplied to the 1st Earl Brownlow for Belton House or the family's Carlton House Terrace home in London, although no documentation has yet come to light.
