Lot Essay

These dressing-tables of serpentined kneehole form with foliate-carved angles and apron and cabochon-headed scrolled legs relate directly to a pattern for a 'commode table' published in Thomas Chippendale's Director of 1762, pl.LXVII. A mid-eighteenth century example of a similar form attributed to the circle of the pre-eminent imigrant cabinetmaker John Channon was sold Sotheby's London 7 July 1995, lot 41 (illustrated in H.Cescinsky, The Gentle Art of Faking Furniture, London, 1931, pl.I).
