Lot Essay

The taste for chinoiserie as promoted by Thomas Chippendale from the late 1750's was particularly popular for bedrooms and as such, this cellaret with its japanned decoration is a rarity. An early eighteenth century example similarly decorated on a metal body is illustrated in R.Butler, The Book of Wine Antiques, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1987, col. pl.21. Another scarlet ground tle jardiniere is in the collection of the Dukes of Beaufort at Badminton.
