Lot Essay

Julius Jacobus van de Sande Bakhuyzen was a prolific and talented artist whose father was Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen, one of the great Dutch painting tutors of 19th century, whose pupils included Willem Roelofs and Jan Willem van Borselen.
Painted in 1870, with broad brush handling, Huis ten Bosch is an excellent example of Hague School painting avant la lettre. With its characteristic silvery-grey tones it qualifies as one of the earliest representations of Dutch realism. The importance of the present lot is emphasised by the fact that Van de Sande Bakhuyzen earned his greatest success with this painting. In 1871 at the Tentoonstelling Leevende Meesters, Amsterdam, it was awarded with the Gouden Rijksmedaille (established the year before by King Willem III).

Van de Sande Bakhyzen was among the first generation of Hague School
painters trying to avoid the well arranged studio compositions and pursue his desire to render a realistic landscape (his portrayal of abundant healthy trees was particularly striking). He could rightly be referred to as one of the pre-eminent interpreters of the Dutch landscape and his oeuvre is easily comparable to that of the great masters such as Gerard Bilders, Willem Roelofs and Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch. Respected by all of his contemporary collegues, he played an important part in artistic life in The Hague. He was one of the founders of the Dutch Watercolour Society and for years was the treasurer of Pulchri Studio. In the 1880s at the height of the Hague School's popularity, Van de Sande Bakhuyzen was one of the best selling artists with the The Hague-branch of the renowned artdealers Goupil.
