Jacobus Nicolaas Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer was born in Borgweer in 1822. After travelling through North America in 1849-1850, the artist settled in Dsseldorf in 1852 and further developped himself in the genre of landscape painting. Like other 19th century landscapists before him, J.N. Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer also undertook a journey to the well-known painter's enclave of Cleves in 1856. His bright and impressionistic portrayals of nature won medals in The Hague, Lyon, Melbourne and Sydney. The present lot is probably mentioned in F. von Boetticher, Malerwerke des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, Frankfurt 1969, no. 6, p.801.
