Secret amusement

Given the fact that the present lot bears distinct similarities with Mathijs Maris' Vlinders, a gracious picture which drew great attention at one of E.J. van Wisselingh's exhibitions in 1893 and sold for the record amount of 20.000 Dutch guilders, one could well presume that Witkamp was inspired by the work and painted the present lot after 1893.
