The inspiration for this design came in part from chairs supplied by the London firm of Maple's (1890s) for the dining room at Queen Victoria's country residence at Sandringham.
Loos was particularly struck by the practicality of the grip inset into the chair back and in translating this to his own design became permanently associated with it; from this time on any chair exhibiting such a feature was à la Loos.
