Lot Essay

The design for the present chair was first created by Dieckmann circa 1925 for the 1927 exhibition Die Wohnung at the Weissenhofseidlung project in Stuttgart. Chairs of this design were placed in House 2 of the Weissenhof estate, the building designed by Mies van der Rohe. Dieckmann had developed the furniture used there at the State College for Crafts and Architecture in Weimar, taking up the challenge of furnishing a '....home for people on the breadline'. These pieces were later suggested as possible standard designs for the industrial production of furniture for small flats.
