Lot Essay

It is interesting to find such a specific Western form combined with Asian materials and Chinese joinery. It is assembled in such a way as to fit perfectly and to respond to climatic changes, which tend to be extreme in some parts of China. Sideboards of this style appear in English furniture during the mid 18th Century that had evolved from earlier designs. C. Crossman, discusses in The China Trade, p. 229, the tendency for Chinese furniture made for the Western market, to continue the fashion of previous styles for a considerable period. Most furniture of this type was made in Canton for the English market.
