A striking design in Piet Kramer's (1881-1961) furniture is the sofa with its very high back. Developed from his earliest furniture designs for the interior of his architectural project for the Marinehuis in Den Helder (1914), the sofa is rather sober of form with flat profile decoration and shows the first elements of the more organic and plastic shapes Kramer would apply in his creations after 1917.
Kramer designed the high-backed sofa offered for sale here for his own use. It was placed in his house at the Johannes Verhulststraat 117 in Amsterdam and is possibly the earliest example of its kind.
