Lot Essay

Toilet services became common in the 17th Century. They often consist of various pieces, like a pair of large rectangular boxes, a smaller pair, two scent bottles, hair brushes and a box with pin-cushion top, a ewer and basin, candlesticks and naturally, a mirror.
A large number of services in varying states and different materials is known. As for example the toilet service in The Hague "Gemeente Museum", by Hermanus van Gulick, The Hague 1665 and 1679
